Thank You Veterans 11th November 2025 www.chillicotheschools.org

Today, the Chillicothe High School (CHS) community gathered to honor our veterans during the annual Veterans Day program, which included a special video presentation featuring World War II veteran Augie Sievering. This year’s program was particularly meaningful, as four of our Leadership students had the incredible opportunity to interview Augie and hear his remarkable story firsthand.

Senior Leadership student Sadie Bonderer took on the task of editing the interview into a compelling video that was shared with the audience. Before the video was played, attendees were given a glimpse into Augie's life and service. Click on this link to view the video.

Augie Sievering grew up on a small truck farm outside of Bethel, Kansas, enlisting in the US Navy at the young age of 17 on April 6, 1944. He often reflects on how he became a World War II veteran before he even graduated high school. After completing boot camp at Farragut Naval Training Station in Idaho, Augie underwent extensive training, including time at Naval radio school in Los Angeles and further training in Maui.

His service included being a radioman on the USS Catoctin, where he played a vital role during the landing of occupation troops in Korea following Japan's surrender. Augie's journey continued aboard the USS Anzio and later the USS John R. Craig, where he was assigned to transport Chinese Nationalist troops fighting for democracy.

After his honorable discharge in 1946, Augie embarked on a diverse career, primarily as a linoleum and tile layer, while also engaging in various jobs throughout his life. He remains active in the community, participating in local parades and recently taking up a new hobby of weaving patriotic potholders, which he generously donates to healthcare workers and community organizations.

At 99 years old, Augie continues to inspire those around him, sharing his incredible stories and experiences. The video showcased just a small portion of his rich history, and the audience was moved by his dedication and service.

As we reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans, we are grateful for the opportunity to honor Augie Sievering and all those who have served. The CHS community extends its heartfelt thanks to Augie for sharing his story and to our Leadership students for their hard work in bringing this tribute to life.

Please enjoy the video of Augie Sievering’s interview, a testament to the bravery and resilience of our veterans.
