For years, one of the highlights of the 8th-grade experience has been the tradition of painting the school windows. This final installation of the year is especially meaningful because it will remain on display throughout the summer months—giving students and the community a chance to enjoy it long after the school year ends.
This year’s window-painting theme was sparked through collaboration with Mrs. Kreatz (Ag Department) and local community members, who suggested a tribute to the United States’ upcoming 250th Anniversary. With their generous support in providing supplies, 62 middle school students brought the idea to life, transforming four sets of windows into a large-scale celebration of American history.
Students led the creative process from the beginning, brainstorming symbols and images that represented the anniversary to them. Stencils and layout guidance were provided to help structure the design, but the painting itself was entirely student-driven.
One of the biggest challenges was working “inside out.” Because the artwork was painted from the inside of the building, students had to create lettering in reverse - an extra-difficult task when tackling detailed calligraphy inspired by the Declaration of Independence. Even with the added complexity, student enthusiasm stayed high as the project took shape.
Watching the windows come together was a highlight of the year, and students were proud of the final result. As one student put it, the finished display looks “pretty fire.”
