Three Hornets All-District

Senior players Amber Parker and Jacob Hicks and junior Clint Macoubrie and boys' head coach Chad Snyder of CHS have been honored by members of the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association's northwest district. Parker, Hicks, and Macoubrie are on the MSSA's all-district high school basketball combined classes 4-5 team for 2004-05. Snyder was tabbed by the media group as the district's top boys' team coach in classes 4-5. For the three players, it is the second postseason honor they have been accorded. Each was named to their gender's all-Midland Empire Conference team - Hicks and Parker to the 10-player first teams and Macoubrie to the honorable mention list of those not named first team.

Snyder was tabbed the district's best boys' coach in the largest classification for the second time in the three years a district top coach has been named. With only Hicks as a returning starter and Macoubrie as the only other player with more than minimal varsity experience, Snyder goaded, guided, and cajoled his team to some notable high points, including an unexpected district championship and state tourney berth. Mixing and matching personnel to offensive and defensive situations in which they could be most effective, Snyder's Hornets also beat a couple of Class 3 state tournament qualifiers - Smithville and Mountain Grove.

Annual Postseason Awards Event Held March 16, 2005

Each player on the varsity, junior-varsity, and freshman levels, as well as team managers, cheerleaders, and dance team members were introduced, letters were presented to those earning them, and team special wards announced at the annual banquet held March 16, 2005, in the CHS Commons. The Hornets' 17-11 varsity season, which saw Chillicothe regain status as a district champion and state tournament participant after a one-year hiatus, was briefly summarized by head coach Chad Snyder. While the season had its ups and downs with only one returning starter and two players with little experience from prior seasons, there were many shining moments. These included winning the District title and state-tourney berth at season's end and "maybe our best game" in the 64-61 victory over then-Class 3 state-ranked Mountain Grove in the MFA Oil/Break Time Shootout at the new Mizzou Arena in Columbia on January 9 (see related story below). Also exciting was the near-upset at home of then No. 1 ranked and unbeaten Platte County a month later when the Pirates won by two on a last-second shot. Snyder presented team special awards to five players: Jacob Hicks (free-throw percentage), Brett Grozinger (rebounds), Jeff Eller (hustle), and co-recipients Andrew Campbell and Clint Macoubrie (Coaches award). Hicks was chosen to the all-MEC team in a season in which three other league teams also made the state tournament in their respective classifications. Macoubrie and Campbell received Honorable Mention, while Sophomore Austin Sloan was included on the league's all-defensive team. In addition to these six, Snyder presented varsity letters to seniors Trent Figg and Matt Perry, and Provisional Letters to junior Tyler Hardie and sophomore Jacob Fellhoelter. Hornets 'Shootout' Hot-Shots
Monday, January 10, 2005

Photo by BK Web WorksCOLUMBIA - Playing in the MFA Oil/Break Time Shootout in the brand-new Mizzou Sports Arena on the campus of the University of Missouri certainly seemed to agree with the Chillicothe Hornets Sunday night. Shooting over 60 percent from the floor while holding Mountain Grove's Panthers to only 35 percent success, the Hornets improved to 6-4 on the 2004-05 campaign, slipping by last year's Class 3 fourth-place state finisher 64-61 in a rare Sunday game.

Coming on the heels of a sharp second half in a win at St. Joseph: Lafayette the previous Monday, the Hornets - very inexperienced at the start of the season - may have turned a corner, now that they have 10 games under their belts.

"We're hoping that's the case," CHS coach Chad Snyder told the C-T after the game, "that it took us some time to get our feet wet. "Now we have. With the way we played against Lafayette and the way we played tonight, I think we're headed in the right direction. "If we can continue to work hard and do the little things, I think we'll be in good shape."

In a pattern which would continue throughout the contest, Chillicothe had 16 of its 26 first-half points in the paint, according to statistics compiled by tournament staff. Stymied by CHS' hustling, positional defense, Mountain Grove, found only six points inside in the first two frames. Continuing to pick apart the Panthers' half-court pressure defense with patience and crisp passing, Chillicothe time and again created short-range scoring opportunities and converted them, allowing the Hornets to start to open some daylight after intermission.

Grozinger and Jacob Hicks, whose career-high 27 points paced the Hornets, continued to get the payoffs of the passing precision. "Country" Grozinger hit three of four shots in the third period and Hicks, who, Snyder said, "really played big for us," two of three as Chillicothe pushed to a 45-39 lead after three quarters. Eventually getting as many as nine points up, the Hornets forced the Panthers to foul repeatedly down the stretch and hit enough (eight of 15) to get to the finish line in front.

Boys Basketball 2003-04 Season

All seven seniors on the 2003-04 squad that ended 20-6 overall received special awards. Coach's Award went to Daniel Meyer and Brad Alden; Most Improved Award went to Matt Radel; Rebound Award went to Josh Gannan; Free-Throw Award went to Adam Fox; Hustle Award went to Clint Keith; and Defensive Player Award went to Scott Lowe. Gannan and Meyer were named first-team to the All-Midland Empire Conference, Lowe was named to the inaugural All Defensive Team, and Fox was named Honorable Mention. Chillicothe shared the MEC championship with current Class 3 state semi-finalist Maryville, as well as district finalists Platte County and Cameron. With a victory over Kearney, the Hornets received first in the Cameron Invitational Tournament. Gannan and Meyer were also named to the KMZU Dream Team. Adam Fox, Daniel Meyer, and Josh Gannan were also named to the All-District Team. Coach Snyder was named All District Coach for Class 2 teams. Junior Varsity ended the season 9-9, and the Freshmen team ended with 6-10 after several close losses. Larry Vance also announced his retirement at the banquet held March 17. Coach Chad Snyder's 2002-03 season resulted in 18-9 overall, 6-1 in Conference and Conference co-champions. The team was District champion and a State qualifier. Two players were All-District, and Coach Snyder was District Coach of the Year.

Annual Postseason Awards Event Held March 16, 2005

Head Coach Karen Jackson noted her team lost several close games to very good opposition. In fact, of the team's dozen losses, nine were to teams which were state-ranked at the time and four of those to St. Joseph: Benton, a state-tournament participant which was ranked No. 1 in the state most of the season before being eliminated in state play by eventual runner-up Lincoln Prep Academy of KC. In addition to having the best record in eight years, Jackson cited winning moments, including the team's championship in the Cameron Invitational tournament - the first Lady Hornets tourney crown since winning at Cameron in 2002, a season-opening victory over St. Joe: Lafayette, and 3-year starter Amber Parker's surpassing of the 1,000 -point level for her career during a Jan. 26 game against Cameron. Parker finished her career with 1,156 points, leaving her 5th on the all-time CHS scoring list. Parker led the team in scoring, rebounding, and other statistics and was chosen to the all-MEC team. Junior point guard Andrea Walter was given Honorable Mention all-MEC after leading Chillicothe in assists and steals. Those two also were chosen to the all-tournament team at the Kearney Bulldog Classic in mid-January. Four special team awards were presented: Parker - free-throw percentage and rebound leader; Walter - Hustler award; and senior Meghann Gilliland - Coaches award. Varsity letter winners included Parker, Gilliland, Walter, Cassie Cox, Katie Quinn, Juniors - Angel Maxwell, Kim May, Bailey Benson, and Maggie Weldon. Three Sophomores - Claire Constant, Mandi Brock, and Kerri Cook - received provisional letters that will become full letters if they fully letter next season. Letters were given to managers Mary Davis, Meagan Scott, and Mary Bonnette.

2003-04 Girls Basketball Season

In 2003-04, the Lady Hornets finished 9-15 with several Chillicothe players earning all-Midland Empire Conference recognition. Amber Parker was All-Conference, and Devon Doss was Honorable Mention. The year was highlighted by the victory over Class 4 State-Tournament qualifier Savannah and a second-place finish in the Cameron Invitational Terounament to St. Joseph Christian, an unbeaten team. The CHS girls Junior Varsity team had an 11-8 season, and the Freshmen had an outstanding 14-3 season. Lady Hornet Amber Parker was also named to the KMZU Dream Team and the 2003-04 All District Team.

State Wrestling Results 02 21 05

A 2004-05 Chillicothe Hornets wrestling season produced high-water marks in the number of state qualifiers and medalists. At the annual banquet held March 1, 2005, Coach Dave Kinen announced the Coaches' Award recipients for the season as the team's two state medalists - senior Keith Minnis and sophomore Bobby Crabtree. Sharing the Ideal Wrestler Award were the other three state qualifiers - senior Michael Marriott and sophomores Preston Mathews and Dustin Murray. Marriott earned first-team all conference status at 145 lbs., while Crabtree (112), Mathews (135), Minnis (189) and senior D.J. Midgyett (189) earned spots on the all-MEC second team by their results in league dual matches in 04-05. Using the number of state medal winners as the tool of comparison, the Crabtree-Minnis pair marks the first time since 1997 CHS had more than a single medalist at Columbia. The five who went to state this season was the most since 1994. On the team level, the season produced a 3-7 dual-match record. This was partially due to the fact that the Hornets had two or three open (no wrestler) weight classes most of the season. Eighteen of the 19 team members received team letters, with the 19th getting a provisional letter. The team had four seniors - Marriott, Minnis, Tommy Ervie, and Midgyett.

The 2003-04 wrestling Hornets didn't measure up, record-wise, to the record-setting performance of its immediate predecessor, but after going 15-3-1 in dual matches a year ago, this year's Hornets finished 11-13, including a 4th place finish in the Midland Empire Conference. Among the top achievements of the 03-04 wrestling Hornets were the qualification of three team members - seniors Chris Earley and Andrew Ripley and freshman Dustin Murray - for Class 1 state tournament, Ripley's Midland Empire Conference championship in the 135-poind weight class, three district champions, and having the most 20-win wrestlers (five) of any CHS squad since the 1989-90 team produced six. In addition to Reipley being first-team All-MEC at 135, two other Hornets earned All Conference recognition for their performances during MEC dual matches. Junior Keith Minnis went 6-1 at 189 pounds to be Second Team All-MEC, while 103-pound Bobby Crabtree, a freshman, also was Second Team with a 6-1 mark. Ripley, whose 25 bout wins this season gave him 91 for his career - fifth most in CHS history, was named the Ideal Wrestler award winner. Earley, who ended his career with 79 wins, tied for ninth most in program history and received the Coach's Award. Murray, who went 25-14 as a freshman at 119 pounds, beat out Crabtree - the team leader in wins with 27 - for the Freshman of the Year award. For dual meets in 2002-03, the wrestlers were 8-1-1. In dual and quad meets, they were 15-3-1. The group was second in Conference, 4th in District, and 19th in State. Three State qualifiers included one 4th place medallist.
