Awards, Scholarships Presented to CHS Graduates Top $240,000
Many seniors from the Chillicothe High School Class of 2008 were awarded scholarships and other financial assistance on Friday during the annual senior awards assembly at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center. During the two-hour event, a crowd of students, parents and well-wishers watched as approximately $240,000 in scholarships, grants and special awards were announced. This year's awards assembly saw around the same number of scholarships and other financial awards distributed as last year. The afternoon event opened with the traditional reading of the senior poem by Brittanee Jacobs and a welcome by high school principal Tony Perry. The assembly closed with the traditional handing down of the senior hat and garter to incoming seniors and the installation of officers for the class of 2009. In between the opening and closing ceremonies were the announcements of scholarships and special awards. There were $95,540 in local scholarships awarded on Friday and$143,854 in college and state money. “This has been a wonderful group of students with whom to work,” said high school senior counselor Cindy Baker. “Individually, they have accomplished many things these past four years, but what has always impressed me has been their willingness to set aside self interests and work together to accomplish something greater. What I will always remember about the Class of 2008 are their positive attitudes, their smiles, their desire to make the most of each situation and their wise and practical choices about their futures.” Several new scholarships were presented at this year's assembly. Among them were the Carole L. Stone Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $500 presented to someone based on need and who plans for attending a vocational or technical school; the Wedlock FCCLA Scholarship, in the amount of $500, presented on behalf of the Wedlock family for a FCCLA member; and the Linda Fullerton Jacobs Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $500, given by a teacher in the Bosworth area who graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1966. During the awards ceremony, Amanda Ireland was recognized for having received the Missouri Scholars 100 Honorable Mention. The Kansas City Golf Association Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was presented by Tony Perry to Logan Gilliland. The Amy Kathryn Hawkins Fine Arts Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was presented by Gary and Marty Hawkins to Stephanie Wiedmier. |
