School Board Reorganizes After Election

Two individuals were recognized for their years of service and leadership to the Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education during the district's regular monthly meeting Tuesday night at district headquarters. John Cook, who retired from the school board in December, was recognized for a combined 16 years of service on the school board. He first served for 10 years in the 1970s and recently completed his sixth year on the board. District Superintendent Dale Wallace presented Cook with a plaque recognizing his service and stating that he has the longest tenure of any Chillicothe school board member. “I've enjoyed working with the board,” Cook said. “I promise I won't run again,” Cook told those in attendance, hesitating only to say, “... that's probably what I said 28 years ago.”

Also Tuesday night, the board recognized Eric Reeter for his service as board president. In other activities Tuesday night, board members elected last week were sworn into office. New on the board is Chillicothe attorney Michael Leamer. Two others elected to the board last week were incumbents Eric Reeter and David Williams. Others currently on the board are Randy Constant, Rick Baker, Tom Chapman and Julie McCoy. After being sworn into office, board members elected officers for the new term. They are Randy Constant, president; Rick Baker, vice president; Kristi Newlin, secretary; and Tom Chapman, treasurer.

Board members voted on a number of personnel issues during executive session Tuesday night. The approved the hiring of Bill Shafer, currently a high school social studies teacher, as assistant Chillicothe High School Principal; Brandon Dennis as computer networking teacher at Grand River Technical School, Aimee Dorrell as high school special education teacher, Cody Denton as CHS physical education teacher, Tim Cunningham as CHS social studies teacher, and Kathy Midgyett as secretary for the district superintendent, The school board also employed all existing non-certified staff members for the next year. The board accepted resignations from Karie Black as the alternative school director, Shelly Dietz as library clerk at Central School, Eric Niswonger as CHS science teacher, Donna Buzard as CHS Spanish, and Lisa Daugherity as CHS special education teacher.
