Chillicothe School Board Revisits Facility Needs
Published: Wednesday, March 19, 2008, C-T

If the next large building complex to be built in the Chillicothe R-2 District is an elementary building, spending huge amounts of money either repairing or replacing the old Chillicothe High School would not be the district's best plan of action. Superintendent Dale Wallace told board members as much last (Tuesday) night at district headquarters during the regular March meeting.

Wallace gave board members an update on the recent survey work conducted by a structural engineer, who is determining how sound the building is, and an architect who is determining the projected costs of both patching it up and replacing it with a connection to the east and west wings. Another architect, Wallace said, is also scheduled to visit the old high school within the next few days to examine the building. Reports on their respective examinations, Wallace said, should be available by the regular April board meeting.

Also during the meeting, board members unanimously approved district funding for the boys and girls soccer teams. Roger Brick, chairman of the High School Soccer Committee, approached the board and asked the district to take over funding the programs, noting that the committee has funded those programs for the past year and a half. For their first year of operation, each program cost about $16,000 and the ongoing cost is estimated to be about $11,000 as the first year included equipment and uniforms. Brick said that the 30 boys and 28 girls participated in the conference sport.

Board members also got another look at the 2008-09 budget projection, which reflected the costs associated with the new Grand River Technical School roof planned this spring and summer at a cost of $305,000. Wallace said that the budget will likely receive tentative approval in June and will be amended in July after the board approves staff salaries. The district's levy will be set in August.

In other business, the board learned about Professional Learning Community at the middle school, tabled a third and final review for the Missouri School Board Association's policy updates and declared seven televisions at Field School surplus property so they may be sold. Following the regular meeting, the board adjourned into executive session where the board re-employed all non tenured teachers for the next year after administrators gave teacher reviews. The board also employed Brandi Ellis, third grade teacher; Amanda Marsh, fifth grade; Candice Schroeder, third grade; Kari Snyder, first grade; and Phillip Pohren, Central School principal. The boaard also accepted the resignation of Connie Singleton, high school LD instructor who is retiring; and Rachel Hunt, high school math teacher.
