HEALTH HOTLINE FOR
CHILLICOTHE R-II SCHOOLS... Updated 02/12/2007 Hello! My name is Mendy Guilford and I am the school health coordinator for the Livingston County Health Center. As school health coordinator I oversee the Missouri Department of Health school health contract which provides health services for Bishop Hogan, Chula, Southwest R-1, and Chillicothe R-II schools. Each year the school districts of Livingston County are required to meet certain health requirements in order for this contract to be renewed and school health services funded by the state to continue. Three of these requirements that must be met depend greatly on you the parents and guardians of Livingston County Students. The first of these requirements is for the health history forms which you fill out each year to be turned in to your student’s school health office. Not only is this a requirement of the school health contract, it is also a very important tool that your student’s school nurses’ use to provide the best care possible. Another requirement of this grant is for 92% of the students in Livingston County to have access to healthcare which means that these students should have a primary care physician. Many parents do not know this, but most insurances and Medicaid pay for pediatric physicals every year up to your child’s eighteenth birthday. If you have not already done this, the beginning of school is a great time to get this physical. This could ensure not only a healthy start to your student’s school year, but also a better academic year since small problems can be found in these physicals such as the fact that your student is having vision or hearing trouble. Along with a physical check-up, the Missouri Department of Health grant also has a requirement that 56% of the students of Livingston County have had a dental exam in the past two years. As with the physical, a great time to have your student see the dentist is at the beginning of school. Dental health can be just as important to your child’s health as a physical exam. Many students throughout the year end up missing school due to dental problems which could have been found and dealt with in a regular dental check-up. Please feel free to contact me at the Chillicothe High School, 660-646-0700 if you need help in finding a health care or dental health provider for your student. You may also contact your students school nurse for more information regarding affordable health care coverage if you do not already have insurance or Medicaid. The Livingston County Health Center will be conducting free sports physicals for the students of Livingston County in the near future. The following criteria apply to receive a FREE sports physical. 1. The student must be a resident of Livingston County and currently in grades 6th -11th. 2. Physical forms will be available in your students’ health office starting Monday, February 15th. 3. The student must have a physical form with the health history portion filled out and signed by a parent/guardian, turned into the designated person for their school no later than 3:00p.m.on Friday, February 16th. Designated person for each school:
The Livingston County Health Center will not be responsible for forms turned into individuals not on this list. 3. The number of physicals which will be done depends on the number that our local physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners volunteer to do. This means first come first served. Forms will be numbered as they come in and will be done in that order. This also means that even though your student turns in a form they are not guaranteed a physical. If your student is not going to receive a physical you will be notified. 4. These physicals will be performed at your students’ school between February 19th and the last day of school unless you are notified otherwise. The school will be given a copy of your students’ physical form after they are completed. 5. Please remember that these physicals are screening devices for participation in sports activities. They do not replace the need for your student to receive a complete physical from their primary care provider.
