Fall sports practice dates:

FOOTBALL (Phil Willard, head coach) - 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. (due to an FCA event that evening) on Monday, August 11; 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. August 12-15 and 18-22 at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium.

SOFTBALL (Stan Baldwin, head coach) - 8-11 a.m. and 6:30-9 p.m. Players should come dressed in appropriate practice attire and should bring a water/cold drink jug with them.

CROSS COUNTRY (Tim Riekena, coach) - 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. at west shelter house in Simpson Park. Twice-daily practices the first two Mondays and Tuesdays. All other practices will be at 7 a.m. Practices will last about 1 1/2 hours.

BOYS' SOCCER (Bill Allison, coach) - 4:00-5:15 p.m. (due to FCA event) August 11 at Danner Park field; August 12-15, 5:00-6:30 p.m. and 7:30 - 8 p.m.; Saturday, August 16, 7:30-9:30 a.m.; August 18-20, 5:00-6:30 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m.; August 21, 5-7 p.m. Bring plenty of water or sports drink. GIRLS' GOLF (Vickie Garrett, coach) - 8 a.m. at Green Hills Golf Course. Call CHS office or coach with questions.

GIRLS' TENNIS (Amy Baker, coach) - 8 a.m. at Danner Park courts. A meeting will be held in the adjacent shelter house if it is raining. Bring an unopened tube of tennis balls and drinking water.

VOLLEYBALL (Karen Jackson, head coach) - 9 a.m. at CHS gym.

All CHS students planning to participate in a fall sport must have a current physical exam completed and their school citizenship form completed either on file at the school or with them for the start of practice.

Summer School applications for Driver's Ed, Credit Recovery, Health, & Personal Finance are available online. Applications are due Thursday, May 1.

The ACT test will be offered by Chillicothe High School on Saturday morning, September 13, 2008. Colleges and Universities use the ACT results as one part of the admissions process. Subjects tested are: English, mathematics, reading, and science. A writing test option is also available.

Monday, August 12, is the deadline to register for the September 13 test. Those interested may register online at www.actstudent.org or by mail. Further information is available at the Guidance Office at Chillicothe High School. The ACT test is open to all area high school students and to interested adults.

The ACT test will also be administered at Chillicothe High School on December 13, 2008, February 7, 2009, and April 4, 2009.

**Registration materials may be picked up in the Guidance office or you may register online per below.

For more information on the ACT, visit their web site. They also have a web site, ACT for Students, where students can register for the tests, send scores, and find information on college and career planning.

Chillicothe will also be giving the SAT test October 4, 2008. Registration packets will be available at the Guidance Office. Deadline for registration is September 9, 2008.

Questions Parents Should Ask on Campus Visits

• How does your school support its freshman? Inquire about orientation programs, mandatory classes or events for freshman, academic advising, and if tutoring or counseling are provided.

• How secure is the campus? Find out if campus police regularly patrol, whether escorts and shuttle buses are available late night, if dorm safety is a priority, and if lighting is adequate.

• Is there a Health Services Center? Ask about its location and its operating hours, what emergency response is like, possible fees, if a doctor is always on call, and if there is a nearby hospital.

• What is the surrounding community like? Learn about shopping and dining options. Inquire about part-time jobs and if public transportation is available.

• Can we attend a class? Sit in on a lecture. Notice the class size, student participation, the kind of assignments given, and if a teaching assistant is leading the class instead of a professor.

• What’s for lunch? Get an idea about a college’s dining options by eating a meal in a dining hall. Observe things like the quality and variety of foods offered, portion size, healthy options, and cleanliness.

SCHOLARSHIPS

This spring you will need to complete the Local Scholarship Application Form. This is the application that will be needed for several of the local scholarships that will be announced in the next few months. Use your computer to type the form as it is a Word file. Save it on your own computer so you can make additions and corrections as the year goes on. Get started on this now so you will have it ready when the local scholarships are announced.
