Students enrolled in the Chillicothe R-II School District have the opportunity to participate in activities beyond the in-school curriculum. Certain activities come under the direction of Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA). These activities include basketball, cheerleading, golf, tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball, instrumental music, flag corp, vocal music, football, pom pon, wrestling and track. Students participating in the above activities plus those of other school-sponsored clubs are covered by our citizenship policy - a Student Eligibility Standard. Academics

This section includes A+, Academic Team, Honor Roll recognition in the newspapers, and National Honor Society

Academic Team - The Academic Team competes against other schools. Questions asked during the academic bowls cover a wide variety of subjects, including algebra, geometry, grammar, literature, current events, and entertainment. This is the perfect way for students to prove their academic achievement. No dues. Fall and Winter weekday practices and Saturday tournaments. Sponsor: Ron Cassity

Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) - This organization teaches students the skills needed to be successful leaders within their community. The organization focuses on family and consumer sciences. Students may participate in local, state, and national leadership meetings. By participating in STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition competition events), students are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and occupational preparation. Dues: $15. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) - FBLA prepares students for business and business-related careers. Through this organization, members have the opportunity to attend many leadership conferences and meet many new people from around the world. Future Teachers of America (FTA) - This group is perfect for students interested in teacher as a career. The FTA helps students learn about the skills needed to become a teacher and to find their path to the education field. Members have opportunities to do cadet teaching and speak with experienced teachers about their career. No dues. Meetings: 3rd Tuesday each month. Sponsor: Deanna Morgan

National FFA Organization - The National FFA Organization is one of the most well known and respected high school activities. It was originally called "Future Farmers of America," but it was changed to the National FFA Organization several years ago to help escape the negative image of being a "farm kid" organization. FFA helps students discover and learn about careers related to the agricultural field, but does not focus only on agriculture. Through workshops and conferences, such as State Convention and National Convention, members will develop their leadership skills and have the opportunity to meet many young people across the state and nation. Vocational Industrial Clubs of America - SkillsUSA (formerly VICA) - The purpose of SkillsUSA is to unite in a common bond all students enrolled in trade/industrial, technical, technology, and health occupations education and to assist students in establishing realistic vocational goals. Yearly activities include a membership drive, fundraiser, community service project, social activities, and various level competitions in leadership and skill areas. Dues: $10 local, $15 district, and also state. Sponsors: Lee Caughron and Steve Polley. Special Interests

Book Club - Book Club is a group of booklovers who meet and exchange thoughts and opinions on a selected book. These lively and creative discussions are informal and fun. The club does not have dues; however, members are requested to bring a food item to each meeting. Book club usually meets five to six times throughout the school year. Sponsor: Pam Constant

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) - The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an organization that joins Christian faith with leadership and other skills. It is an organization for students to share in spiritual guidance as well as recreational activities. Contact Todd Matthew for more information.

Foreign Language Club - The Foreign Language Club helps students develop fluency in different languages as well as learn about the cultures of those countries. The club has recreational activities and field trips to help study international interests. Yearly activities include a fall pizza party and a spring cookout. Dues: $3. Sponsors: Mary Pauley & Donna Buzard

Hi-STEP - High school taught elementary program is designed to teach lessons on peer pressure, self-esteem, and substance abuse awareness to elementary students. No dues. Teach six lessons in the spring of the school year. Sponsor: Pam Gabel

History Club - The purpose of the history club is to provide students at CHS an opportunity to learn, discuss, and analyze the people and events that have shaped our country’s history. Students will have an opportunity to debate issues of historical significance and travel to local historical sites. Dues are $5.00. Sponsor: Jim Wheeler

Hunting and Fishing Club - To help more students learn and experience the outdoors. Fish Fry in October, Big Buck Contest and Quail Shoot in November, trip to Missouri Trapshooters Association in March, camping and fishing trip to Bennett Springs in April, banquet in May. Monthly meetings usually on Thursday - no set dates. Sponsor: Mike Lewis

Key Club - Carries out acts to better the community as a whole. Trick-or-Treat for Unicef, ring the Salvation Army Bell at Christmas, visits nursing homes. Meet every other Friday morning and some evenings. Dues: $15. Sponsor: Mary Pauley

Science Club - Promotes student interest in the sciences. Dues: $2. Sponsors: Debbie Goodwin, Pam Gabel, Nancy Thorne

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) - SADD has been an outstanding organization in the Chillicothe school district for many years. Each year, the chapter is represented by 30-40 upstanding students who are interested in making a difference among youth today. The main activity of SADD is assisting with Project Prom. This is an annual event held after Prom each year to promote positive extra-curricular activities on Prom Night. Some past themes include: Renaissance (2002), International Night of Mystery (2003), and Luau Madness (2004). Students participate in games, food, and fun from 11:30 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. At the end of the evening, prizes are raffled off and breakfast is served. Sponsors: Angela Peterson, Lisa Daugherty

Booster Club | Sports Programs

"C" Club (Boys & Girls) - The "C" Club is a club that promotes school spirit. To be a member of the "C" Club, a student must letter in a sport. The group participates in several activities throughout the year to promote school spirit and reward the students for their hard work in sports. Dues: $10 Girls and $5 Boys. Girls Sponsors: Vicki Garrett and Amy Baker. Boys Sponsor: Phil Willard

Cresset (Yearbook) - The Cresset is the school's yearbook. Members of this group work the whole year to compile pictures and articles. To be a part of the Cresset team, a student needs to sign up for the yearbook class with Mrs. Pauley. Sponsor: Mary Pauley

Executive Committees - Junior Executive Committee & Senior Executive Committee

Senior Executive Committee members are selected by members of the Senior Class to act as a representative body for the entire class. Responsibilities include such things as selecting Graduation announcements, Class Motto, Senior Poem, and Class gift, which is presented to the High School each spring. This committee also plans all senior activities for the year and organizes fund raising for the class.

Junior Executive Committee members are selected by members of the Junior Class and the school staff to act as a representative body for the entire class. Responsibilities include fund raising activities - Concession stands at all Varsity Football games, stadium clean-up after each Varsity Football home game, and product sales. The biggest responsibility is planning for and providing all arrangements for the Junior/Senior Prom that is held each spring.

Fine Arts

Instrumental Music - The Instrumental Music Department has four different bands. Auditions are only required for Jazz Band. A student may be part of as many bands as they like. Visit our Band page for a yearly schedule and to see photos of our bands in action. You may also see our band support groups here. Sponsor: Dave Goodwin District Contest Results 2005 and 2006

  • Chilli Peppers - Play at home basketball games and pep assemblies to help keep up school spirit.
  • Concert Band - Plays at all school concerts and competes in band competitions.
  • Marching Band - Marches at football games and in parades and Band Days.
  • Jazz Band - Explores the love for jazz music and plays at various concerts and competitions.

Vocal Music - The Vocal Music Department is divided into four different choirs. Auditions are held the spring before the school year begins. Students must be enrolled in a choir class to participate. Sponsor: Andy Grooms District Contest Results 2005

  • Choraliers - Choraliers is a group of both males and females. Auditions are required, and students perform at every concert. The premier choral group. Choralier Calendar & Archives
  • Coming Attractions - A male and female choir. They perform at all high school concerts and attend contests in the spring. Auditions are required.
  • Concert Chorale - A co-ed choir. Auditions are not required for this group. Students perform at all high school concerts, but do not attend contests.
  • Sound Effects - An all-girl choir that performs at all high school concerts. Auditions are required.

The cast practices for "Footloose," a fall musical for November 11-14, 2004.Drama: CHS Players - The CHS Players is a group of talented young students who enjoy acting and performing for an audience. The Players perform a number of productions each year. Past plays include "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The Crucible." They have also performed with the Chillicothe Little Theatre in productions such as "Children of Eden" and "Laugh-In." If you have a love for theatre and performing arts, this is the group for you. Advanced Academic Studies Certificate - To be eligible for the certificate, a student must meet the following requirements:

Complete 12 semesters of advanced courses or dual-credit courses with at least 8 of those semesters from each of the core subject areas of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Receive a grade of at least a B- in each advanced course taken.

Tech Prep Certificate - Use the Tech Prep certificate within 15 months of graduation. 
Complete 12 hours of credit at NCMC (6 hours must be in the related program area. Earn a 2.0 grade point average in those 12 hours. Take the "Tech Prep Certificate" to the Student Services office at NCMC and complete Form 3A, the Application for College Credit. After you have completed Form 3A, you will be awarded the "free" college credit hours you earned at the Grand River Technical School.
