Chillicothe Middle School's football Hornets debuted last week with a 16-12 home victory over Smithville at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium. The CMS squad built a 16-0 lead with a short first-quarter touchdown run by Austin Hatfield, set up by Guy Vinson's pass interception and return, and Connor Dixon's 15-yard run around left end in the third. It remained 16-0 until the final three minutes when, on the first play after a lengthy delay while an injured Smithville player was medically treated, a deep pass off a fake reverse went for about a 40-yard touchdown. However, the Hornets held on the 2-point conversion attempt, keeping it still a two-score lead. Smithville then recovered its onside kick and used another long pass to score once more, cutting the margin to 16-12. However, another stop on the Warriors' conversion attempt maintained the four-point spread, meaning neither a safety nor field goal would allow the visitors to catch up. Another onside kick attempt then failed to go the required 10 yards and Chillicothe took possession and ran out the clock. “We have a lot to improve upon, but we blocked well,” CMS head coach Doug French assessed. “I thought our offensive line stayed low and maintained their blocks well. And, of course, I'm happy we have some good athletes that run and catch and throw the ball well.” CMS Volleyball Girls Defend Title in Own Tourney
Chillicothe Middle School's volleyball girls repeated as champions of their own annual tournament last Saturday, sweeping through four matches. The four-school Chillicothe Invitational saw the Lady Hornets defeat Richmond 25-15, 25-17 in the championship match after having defeated the Lady Spartans 25-18, 25-11 during round-robin pool play. “It was a fun way to finish up,” CMS coach Pam Gabel commented. “These girls played together and won the championship without much resistance.” During their pool matches, the Lady Hornets also gained a 25-4, 25-5 win over Trenton and a 25-9, 25-18 victory over Cameron, the team Chillicothe beat in last year's finals. Statistically, on the day, Chillicothe's top performances, as reported by coach Gabel, included: Kati Jo Ross - 37 service points (23 aces), seven kills; Ashley Myers 24 service points (14 aces), 20 kills; Cheyenne Bannan - 27 service points (nine aces), 17 assists; Bradee Gabel - 19 service points (13 aces), 14 assists, eight kills; Bailey Keith - 19 service points (16 aces, eight kills; Konner Ferguson - 10 service points (5 aces); and Libby Kline - two kills. “I watched (all the players) improve with each practice and match,” coach Gabel related. “They have a lot of enthusiasm for volleyball. Hopefully, they have a desire to carry that into high school and continue their success.” Eighth Grade
football Hornets Even Record The Chillicothe 8th Grade Hornets football team evened its record at 1-1 with a 34-12 loss to the visiting Cameron Junior High Dragons, Tuesday night at Litton Stadium. On the games opening drive the Hornets fumbled the ball away on the second play from scrimmage with the Dragons recovering it. Cameron's workhorse, Sawyer Marlay quickly took advantage and scored on a 40 yard run and with the two point conversion Cameron was on top 8-0. Capitalizing on another Chillicothe fumble the Dragons scored again on their next drive to make the score 14-0. Cameron scored once more right before the half to make it 20-0. This came after Josh Rockhold's long kickoff return for a touchdown was called back for an unnecessary block in the back. The young Hornets came out fired up to start the second half, but it wasn't long before Cameron took the opening kickoff of the second half in for another score making it 28-0. Never giving up, the Hornets scratched the scoreboard on a short pass from Laine Saunders to Rockhold who weaved his way to a 45 yard score. Cameron added another touchdown on a long pass to push the score to 34-6 entering the fourth quarter. The final quarter saw Rockhold take a sweep along the left side and cut it back against the grain for a 65 yard touchdown run to make the final score 34-12. CHS Lady Hornet
Volleyball Squads Improve to 2-1 The Chillicothe Middle School Lady Hornets volleyball teams traveled to Carrolton on Monday and came home with a pair of victories. CMS girls won the "A" game in two sets 25-19 and 25-14. "The "A" game was exciting to watch," commented Coach Pam Gabel. "The girls' serves were consistent and strong. At this level, the serve is so vital to winning the game." Bradee Gabel had 9 service points, 7 aces and 1 kill, Cheyenne Bannon had 8 service points, with 6 aces, Bailey Keith contributed 4 service points with 4 aces and Ashley Myers had 5 kills. "The players are beginning to put together pass, set and hit. We have worked hard on trying to put this combination into action. It makes the game so much more fun for them to actually have an offense!" Added Coach Gabel. Middle
